Negoiation Skills Training 15 April 2008

On 15 April 2008 DSHG will be re-running the successful negotiation skills training course that was first run last September.

The course will be of interest to delegates with a range of different experience levels of negotiation including:

  • Housing Enablers

  • Planners

  • Rural Housing Enablers

  • RSL Development Officers

The course does cover some negotiation theory but will focus on your individual negotiation skills development and is based on the Forum Theatre approach demonstrated at the recent Affordable Housing Delivery Group.

Places are limited to 10 delegates however you can make an early reservation by responding to this email. We are looking to keep costs to a minimum but this is an intensive course and costs are likely to be in the region of £150 for the day.

On the course you will be working with 2 professional actors in small groups and you will be able to practise in a 'live' situation the skills for successful negotiation. You will also receive feedback on your default behaviours in negotiation situations and have the opportunity to observe your peers within small groups and learn from their styles as well.

The scenarios for negotiation are based on situations experienced by Housing Enablers and Planners when negotiating Affordable Housing through the planning system. You can also tell us in advance if there are any specific situations that you would like to work on.

The lead trainer Celia Delaney of Creative Training Solutions who has experience of negotiating first hand, having worked for Unilever in Human Resources and negotiated with unions and employee representatives on pay deals. She has worked with a number of clients, both in the public an private sectors on negotiation and influencing skills using actors to enable delegates to practise these skills in a 'safe' environment.

Places are limited to 10 delegates per day so priority will be given to:

- Affordable Housing Delivery Group representatives

- Contributing partners to DSHG.

- First come first served, balanced by a need to give each LA an opportunity to take up a place.

Delegates attending the course in September gave very positive feedback and it is worth asking your colleagues about it if you know someone who attended.

We are also exploring setting up opportunities for one to one negotiations skills training. If you would like to find out more please email me on mary.ridgway@southhams.gov.uk.
